Carrot Potato Mash

Carrot and potato boil together in one pan: the potato softens the carrot’s sweetness and gives the puree body, so it holds on a spoon rather than running off.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. 1Peel 1 carrot and ½ potato, then dice both — carrot takes longer, so cut it slightly smaller than the potato.
  2. 2Cover with water in a small pan, bring to the boil, then lower to a steady simmer for 15–18 minutes.
  3. 3Test with a fork: both vegetables should crush under almost no pressure before you drain them, keeping some cooking water back.
  4. 4Blend to a smooth puree, adding the reserved water gradually — potato turns gluey if overworked, so stop as soon as it is even.
  5. 5Let it stand until lukewarm, then serve, leaving it as thick or as loose as suits your baby.

Tip. Mash by hand rather than blending if you want a slightly coarser result as your baby moves on from smooth purees.

Texture by age

6–8 months
Blend or mash very smooth when appropriate for your baby's feeding abilities.

8–10 months
Many babies may be ready for slightly more texture as their skills develop.

10–12 months
Serve thicker or try a preloaded spoon when developmentally appropriate.

A quick safety note

Always supervise your baby while eating and serve food in a texture and shape appropriate for their developmental abilities.
